Iran tried to understand two tankers in the Gulf of Oman, the US Navy announced.

According to the Central Command of the Naval Forces of the 5th fleet, the Iranians opened fire in one of the two incidents involving tankers near the coast of Oman, with both attacks taking place in international waters.

The US Navy said the Iranian vessel left when the destroyer engaged USS McFaul (DDG 74) of the US Navy. In addition, the US Navy developed surveillance assets, including the MQ-9 Reaper and P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

“Iranian navy vessel fired during the second seizure attempt», said Navy Fifth Fleet spokesman Timothy Hawkins.

The US did not provide further information about the tankers. According to information, however, one of the two ships is Greek-owned, with the flag of the Bahamas. The tanker Richmond Voyager had sailed from the port of Ras Tanura bound for Singapore and was transporting oil for the American company Cevron, which confirmed the incident.

For its part, the British Merchant Shipping Service (UKMTO) reported that shots were fired at a tanker in the Gulf, which was approached by security forces from a country that British authorities did not name.

The vessel and its crew are safe after the incident in territorial waters between Iran and Oman, off the coast of Oman’s capital Muscat, according to UKMTO.

Maritime security firm Ambrey said one ship was a Bahamian-flagged oil tanker owned by Greece and operated by a US company.
