Tabrez Ansari, 24, was tortured for twelve hours in 2019 by unknown people who accused him of rape.
Ten Indians were sentenced on Wednesday in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand state, to serve ten years in prison for the lynching of a Muslim man who died after being tortured and forced to shout Hindu slogans.
Tabrez Ansari, 24, was tortured for twelve hours in 2019 by unknown people who accused him of rape.
Video of the young man, which has gone viral on social media, shows him being forced to chant the slogan “Jai Sri Ram” (“Rama is my god”), a phrase popular among Hindu fanatics.
Police then arrested Tabrez Ansari for rape, while he was in critical condition. He wasn’t taken to hospital until days later.
He succumbed to his injuries.
Because of the scandal caused by the lynching case, the police eventually arrested 12 Hindus, two of whom were acquitted for lack of evidence.
The remaining ten were sentenced last week. Their sentence, ten years in prison, was announced yesterday.
The victim’s wife, Shaista Parveen, who believes the police were complicit in her husband’s death, has announced she will appeal.
“I respect the court’s decision, but I was not completely satisfied. We will appeal,” he told AFP.
Hindu nationalist federal Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been repeatedly criticized for shying away from condemning incidents of sectarian violence, especially by his intolerant co-religionists, said he was “saddened” by Tabrez Ansari’s death.
