The White House announced today that it looks forward to Sweden joining NATO “in the near future.”

It is “likely” that Turkey and Hungary, currently blocking Stockholm’s membership, will change their position next week at the Alliance summit in Vilnius, said Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, stressing that even if that doesn’t happen (then), Washington reckons “it will happen in the near future”.

Speaking to reporters, Sullivan expressed confidence that Sweden will join NATO “in the not-too-distant future” amid Turkey’s objection to the Nordic country’s membership.

He added that US President Joe Biden will hold talks with his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan at the summit in Vilnius.
