For most of her life Joy Ryan had never seen the natural landscape beyond her home in Ohio State.
Her grandson Brad Ryan has a great love for his grandmother and when she was in her mid-eighties he decided to take her on a trip to see all the National Parks in the country – from the deserts of southern California to the dense forests of Alaska.
“When I found out that he had never seen the great wilderness of America – deserts, mountains, oceans, you name it – I thought that was something that would haunt me if I didn’t intervene in some way,” confessed Brad Ryan.
The journey took eight years and now, at 93, Grandma Joy has seen all 63 parks, culminating in American Samoa National Park.
In fact, despite her age, Grandma Joy was able to hike and whitewater raft.

Grandma and grandchild shared on Grandma Joy’s travel Instagram a photo of themselves in front of the 63rd sign, and grandma was given a certificate by park rangers for visiting all of the US National Parks.

However, even though their US tour is over, Joy Ryan and Brad Ryan haven’t had enough of travel: They’re probably in Kenya right now!
