With an eye on the NATO Summit in Vilnius, 6 US Congressmen are asking in a letter to the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken for the creation of an oversight mechanism that will ensure that Turkey does not use the new F-16 fighter jets for the violation of Greek sovereignty in the Aegean.

“If an agreement to sell F-16s and modernization kits to Turkey is being considered, we strongly urge that any final agreement include mechanisms to stop, delay or withdraw the transfer of such weapons if Turkey engages in actions that threaten or undermine U.S. national security interests and the unity of the NATO alliance,” the letter said

In this letter, the 6 MPs make special reference to Turkish practices in the Aegean.

“Given Turkey’s history of using US F-16s for overflights in the Aegean and for challenging Greek sovereignty, we are calling for mechanisms that provide for the cessation, delay or withdrawal of US arms transfers to Turkey if it continues its destabilizing actions in the Eastern Mediterranean”

The letter to the US Secretary of State is signed by MPs Chris Papas, Gus Bilirakis, Frank Palone, John Sarbanis, Dina Titus, and Nicole Malliotakis. All 6 belong to the Greek issues group in the House of Representatives of the Congress.

“Turkey’s behavior towards its neighbors as well as its general relations with Russia compel Congress to continue to act as a bulwark against Ankara. The Turks know very well that it is very difficult to obtain war material from the USA without conditions and preconditions, and they always include this in every bargain they make” comments the ND Member of Parliament – Internationalist, Tasos Hatzivasileiou.

At the same time, the Greek armed forces continue to be strengthened with armament programs.

Of particular interest, however, is the meeting of the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO Summit.
