Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by phone with US President Joe Biden this afternoon, according to the Turkish presidency.

The subject of discussion between the two leaders, shortly before the NATO Summit in Vilnius, were the F-16s, the gradual entry of Sweden into NATO, the position of Ukraine in the “Atlantic Alliance”, as well as the process of Turkey’s accession to the EU .

According to the Turkish presidency, Biden and Erdogan agreed to meet within the framework of the NATO Summit to be held in Vilnius in the coming days.

As reported by Reuters, Erdogan told Biden that Sweden has taken steps in the right direction for Ankara to ratify its candidacy, citing the anti-terror law, but that these steps are not enough as supporters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK ) continued to hold demonstrations in Sweden.

He also stressed that it is not correct to associate Turkey’s request for F-16s with Sweden’s NATO membership and thanked the US president for his support for Turkey’s request for the warplanes.

He also emphasized that his country is honest and maintains a principled stance regarding its EU membership. and stated that he would like the leadership of the European Union to send a clear and strong message of support regarding Turkey’s accession at the Vilnius Summit.

It is recalled that last Thursday, Sweden failed to persuade Turkey to lift its veto to allow it to join NATO during a meeting of foreign ministers, as Ankara demanded more action in the fight against terrorism.
