After Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government came to power in January, Israel announced a series of sanctions against the Palestinian Authority in order to “pay the price” for its request to be considered at the UN issue of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
The government of Israel said last Sunday night that it wants to prevent the “collapse” of the Palestinian Authority, but in return it demanded a series of commitments on its part, such as, in particular, the end of “actions against Israel on the international stage”, according to a press release of the services of the Israeli Prime Minister.
After Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government came to power in January, Israel announced a series of sanctions against the Palestinian Authority in order to “pay the price” for its request to be considered at the UN issue of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
The Israeli government’s national security council adopted a proposal by the prime minister that provides for actions to “prevent the collapse of the Palestinian Authority”, but without renouncing the demand to end its “actions against Israel on the international stage”, according to the bulletin Press.
The announcement also contains other conditions, such as an end to “incitement to hatred in the media and the education system”, an end to “benefits to terrorist families” and an end to “construction activity” in Area C (under Israeli control) in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office has not gone into detail about what kind of actions his government will take to prevent the collapse of the Palestinian Authority, which exercises its – limited – powers over roughly 40 percent of the West Bank.
For their part, Israeli media reported the creation of industrial zones for Palestinians in Area C and other measures that will favor daily economic activity.
The decision by the Israeli government’s national security council was announced some twenty-four hours after the large-scale “anti-terrorist” operation in Jenin, in the northern West Bank, in which 12 people were killed on the Palestinian side and a non-commissioned officer on the Israeli side.
In January, Israel decided to freeze tax funds earmarked for the Palestinian Authority up to the amount paid in 2022 “to terrorists and their families.”
The Palestinian Authority pays monthly stipends to families of Palestinian prisoners in Israel accused of anti-Israeli attacks and of what it calls “martyrs”, meaning people killed in anti-Israeli actions or in clashes with the Israeli army in the West Bank.
Israel also decided earlier this year to freeze all Palestinian building activity in certain sectors of Palestinian territory held by the Israeli military since 1967.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Stageh complained at the time that the sanctions were an attempt to push the Palestinian Authority “to the brink of economic collapse”.
