The green light that Turkey gave to Sweden’s accession to NATO was welcomed by Mr UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in bilateral meeting that he had with him Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

Mr. Sunak congratulated the Turkish President “for his efforts” on this.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their shared commitment to fulfilling the full potential of bilateral relations, centered on trade ties and “strong cooperation” in the field of defense and security.

In discussing opportunities to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, including advanced defense technology and addressing the common migration challenge, Mr. Sunak noted that cracking down on criminal gangs of smugglers is a top priority for him.

The two leaders agreed to instruct their Foreign Ministers to consider aspects of closer cooperation on immigration and organized crime.

They also agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation on security intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism.

President Erdogan, moreover, informed the British Prime Minister about Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent visit to Turkey. Messrs. Sunak and Erdogan agreed on the importance of securing an extension to the agreement to export Ukrainian grain from the Black Sea.
