Ukraine’s defense needs and the prospect of joining NATO were discussed on the sidelines of the Alliance summit in Vilnius by Ukrainian President Zelensky and British Prime Minister Sunak.

The two leaders discussed in particular the steps towards Ukraine’s NATO membership that took place in the Lithuanian capital, as well as the progress of the Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian forces.

According to Mr. Zelensky, further cooperation on expanding the capabilities of the Ukrainian military on the battlefield, in particular through the acquisition of long-range weapons and, in the future, Western aircraft, was touched upon.

Rishi Sunak spoke about the latest UK support package for Ukraine and the importance of security arrangements for Ukraine agreed at G7 level. The British leader commented that now Kiev is gaining an even greater level of resilience against Russian aggression.

The Ukrainian leader expressed his gratitude to Mr. Sunak and the United Kingdom for supporting his country’s NATO membership, for participating in providing effective security guarantees, and for recently hosting the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London.
