Kyiv municipality on Thursday banned the public use of all “cultural products” in the Russian language, including books, music, films and plays.
Russian is the language of the “aggressor state” and has no place in Kyiv, city council member Vadim Vasilchuk said, according to a press release from the city government.
“Once and for all, cultural products in the Russian language must be banned (…) in the capital of Ukraine,” he insisted.
The decision was approved by 71 of the 120 members of the municipal council.

Penalties for offenders were not disclosed.
Since February 2014, when the so-called “Maidan revolution” took place, efforts to promote the Ukrainian language have intensified.
The Ukrainian Constitution continues to guarantee the use of the Russian language, which is considered a minority language. But after the Russian military invaded Ukrainian territory in February 2022, the pressure to wipe out anything Russian intensified.
