The US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced Friday that the United States would work with its allies to prevent any “attack” by North Korea, a day after the announcement of Pyongyang for launch of a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

“We are fully united in a common defense and we assure that we are doing everything possible to prevent any attack and protect ourselves from it,” Blinken repeatedly said during his meeting with the foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea in Jakarta.

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin said the new ballistic missile test came as regional powers met for talks in Jakarta, where North Korea has sent an official.

“What North Korea is doing completely contradicts the expectations of the international community”Park said.

“I hope our trilateral dialogue today will strengthen our resolve to respond decisively and forcefully — categorically — to North Korea’s continued provocations and to send the message that their provocations will not go unpunished,” he added.

North Korea said leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the launch of the missile – Pyongyang has only fired such a missile once before, in April.

That missile traveled 1,001 km at a maximum height of 6,648 km before crashing into the East Sea, the official KCNA news agency reported, using the Korean name for the Sea of Japan.

The launch was a “big explosion” that shook “the entire planet,” KCNA wrote.

North Korea rejected the proposals of President Joe Biden’s administration for negotiations, following the historic summits Kim was able to have with former President Donald Trump.
