Donald Trump said today that he received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith notifying the former US president that he is the target of a federal investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol and for attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election.

“Insane Jack Smith, Joe Biden’s DOJ prosecutor, sent me a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am the TARGET of his January 6th investigation,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Media, the social media that he owns.

The front-runner for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election said he had been given “just four days” to appear in court. He emphasized that this process “almost always” leads to an indictment, calling this investigation a “witch hunt.”

Later today, defense attorneys and federal prosecutors are expected to make their first appearance in a Florida district court before presiding Judge Eileen Cannon on charges of mishandling classified information and obstruction of justice.

Trump was indicted by federal authorities last month for keeping and showing classified documents to others after he left the White House. Among the charges are “withholding information concerning national security” and “obstruction of justice”.

Smith is leading the prosecution in this case as well.

The Republican billionaire has also been indicted in New York State for accounting fraud in connection with a payment made before the 2016 presidential election to silence a porn star.

Georgia’s attorney general is also expected to announce by September the outcome of her investigation into the former president’s pressure to try to change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in that US state.
