The landslide hit the remote mountain village of Irsaluadi in the western state of Maharashtra, about 60 kilometers from Mumbai, overnight.
The death toll from a large landslide in western India has risen to 16, with fears that around 100 people remain trapped, officials said.
The landslide struck overnight in the remote mountain village of Irsaluadi, in the western state of Maharashtra, about 60 kilometers from Mumbai, leveling several houses and trapping many people.
Rescuers recovered 16 bodies before daylight and local authorities recommended suspending rescue efforts, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) director general Atul Karwal told Reuters. “It is not possible to search for people in the dark in such terrain,” he said.
Rescuers searched for survivors for more than 12 hours in heavy rain and fog, dodging large rocks that tumbled down the mountainside, a Reuters witness and local media reported.
It is estimated that at least 225 people lived in the small settlement, said Deputy Chief Minister of the western state of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, adding that more than 80 people managed to escape. However, there are fears that more than 100 people are trapped in the debris.
More rain is expected today, but not as heavy, a weather service official said.
