A 13-year-old kidnapped girl was saved while in her kidnapper’s car thanks to the note she had the courage to write and stick to the window.
The incident took place in a car wash parking lot in Long Beach, southern California, while the girl was abducted from the street in San Antonio, Texas on July 6 at gunpoint.
Passers-by saw her inside the parked car holding a note that read “help me” (center photo) and immediately informed the police.
At that time her abductor had entered a laundromat.
Officers found the 13-year-old “emotionally charged and distressed” and arrested Steven Robert Champlan, 61, of Cleburne, Texas.
The perpetrator was arraigned in federal court on charges of kidnapping and transporting a minor for the purpose of criminal sexual activity, according to the US Attorney’s office in Los Angeles.
Officers determined the girl had been sexually assaulted while being transported to California and found a replica firearm in the vehicle, the news release said.
