A fast-spreading wildfire has forced residents to evacuate a rural area in Washington state’s Klickitat County.

The Nowell Road fire has already destroyed several structures in the area and threatens homes, farms, crops and livestock, power plants that utilize solar panels and wind turbines, and a gas pipeline, according to county officials.

It is moving toward the Yakama Native Reserve, according to Allen Leibovitz, a spokesman for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, who spoke during a press conference in Bickleton, a community of about 80 residents 120 miles from Portland, Oregon.

The fire is raging in areas that make it “difficult” to fight, Mr. Leibovitz said. “We are on red alert. This is every firefighter’s worst fear because the humidity drops rapidly. The winds are picking up. And so the fire spreads with great speed.”

Forces from adjacent areas are rushing to the area. It is burning north of the Columbia River, a natural border with the state of Oregon.

The authorities have not specified the cause of the fire.

No injuries or deaths have been reported so far.
