Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was released today from Sheba Medical Center, where he underwent surgery yesterday to have a pacemaker installed, the health structure announced.

Mr. Netanyahu has been discharged and left Sheba’s cardiology department, a spokesman for the medical center where the head of the Israeli government was admitted overnight Saturday into Sunday said.

Israel’s prime minister is expected to attend a vote later today in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, to approve a controversial justice reform bill that has sparked protests and mass protests for months.

The bill removes the ability of the Supreme Court to overturn government or ministerial decisions if it deems them “absurd”. If passed, which is a certainty given the balance of power in Israel’s national delegation, it would be the first of the reforms to take effect as part of an overhaul of the justice system promoted by Mr. Netanyahu’s coalition government, the most right-wing in Israel’s history.

The issue has divided Israeli society for over six months. Thousands of citizens often participate in mass mobilizations denouncing the weakening of the justice system. Lately, the planned reform has met with increasing resistance in the ranks of Chahal, the Israeli army.

Opponents of the reform call it a threat to democracy.
