The possibility of a new meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to de-escalate tensions in Ukraine was left open by Anthony Blinken in an interview with George Stefanopoulos.
Asked about this, the US Secretary of State reminded that the two presidents met again in Geneva a few months ago. “If it proves productive and useful to try to resolve the situation through direct communication between the two presidents, it is something we are definitely ready to do,” he said.
The US Secretary of State will brief Joe Biden on his meeting with Lavrov, while on Monday he will also inform his European counterparts on the written response he agreed to send to Russia on the Ukrainian issue.
According to Katerina Sokou, it will include the concerns of the United States and its allies about Russia’s actions that threaten Europe’s security, and will propose mutual commitments for transparency in military exercises, risk reduction measures and control of armaments in a last-ditch effort to resolve the crisis diplomatically.
The Geneva talks were “sincere and substantial,” Anthony Blinken said after meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Geneva.
