China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang, missing for a month, relieved of his dutiesChinese state media reported.
Qin Gang was appointed foreign minister in December 2022 and is being replaced in his post by his predecessor Wang Yi, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
No justification has been given by the agency for his removal. New China also broadcasts other new appointments, such as that of economist Pan Gongsheng, head of China’s central bank.
Qin Gang has not appeared since June 25thwhen he had met with his Vietnamese counterpart in Beijing.
Since then, he has been absent from several diplomatic appointments, including the Asean summit in early July in Indonesia.
His disappearance fueled rumors on social media, while the Foreign Ministry initially attributed his absence to “health reasons” and then went silent.
His replacement, Wang Yi, is the official in charge of diplomatic affairs in the Chinese Communist Party and is hierarchically superior to the foreign minister.
