Italy has been shocked by the complaint of a 19-year-old American student, who revealed to the police authorities that she was raped in the historic area of Testaccio, in the Italian capital.
“All I know is that I woke up with a stranger on top of me. “For hours, he kept me bedridden, unable to move,” the victim told the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.
The only thing the girl could add is that the day before this terrible event, she had gone out with her friends and they had gone to Testaccio’s shop to have a drink. At the store, she met a young man in his thirties, who offered her a cocktail. According to prosecutors, the drink apparently contained Ghb, also known as a “rape drug”.
The girl had come to Rome to attend a course at a private, American university. After her complaint, she decided to return to the United States, after first going to the hospital and undergoing a medical examination.
As the Italian commentators point out, this latest tragic event raises the already great concern about the use of synthetic drugs that dissolve in beverages, and make young women unable to defend themselves and resist their rapists.
