Germany: Navy chief resigns after pro-Russian statements

by

The head of the German Navy, Rear Admiral Kai-Achim Senbach, has resigned following reactions to statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin that “it is worthy of respect” that Kiev will never regain the Crimean peninsula. “Putin wants to be treated as an equal by the West,” according to a government source in Berlin.

“What (Putin) really wants is respect. And, my God, respecting someone does not cost much, it costs nothing. “It’s easy to give him the respect he wants – and he probably deserves it,” Sch Σnbach said, describing Russia as an old and important country.

Earlier, a Defense Ministry spokesman in Berlin said that Schένnbach’s comments did not reflect Germany’s position, either in content or in wording. “Rear Admiral Schμnbach will have the opportunity to express his views,” he told the defense minister.

At the same time, Ukraine accused Germany of “encouraging” Russian President Vladimir Putin after Berlin refused to send weapons to Kiev, which is worried about an impending invasion after the gathering of Russian forces on its borders.
