Only a few tables are set in the Omicron tavern in Germany. Usually no one eats only Greek here. There is also live music and dancing. The pandemic at this time is dominated by the synonymous variant of the virus: the Micron. “It is the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet”, says the owner Costas Tsapakidis when asked how the tavern got its name. The name of the variant did not cause much problems in the tavern, at least not more than what the pandemic itself causes, he says.
The Omicron Tavern has been close to the Frankfurt Trade Fair for 30 years. The anniversary will be celebrated with drumbeats and musicians from Greece. But when this will happen is not clear. The owner Costas Tsapakidis faces the situation with humor and confidence. “We are not a variation, we are the original,” he says with a smile. And in his restaurant they are infected only by the joy of life. He hopes the Omicron variant will soon mark the end of the pandemic.
A coffee that became famous …
Korona, as the coronavirus is called in German, Covid or Booster were before the pandemic names of companies, people, products. Brewery group Anheuser Busch Inbev spoke of a jump in sales of “Corona Extra” beer. However, the representatives of the company cannot say with certainty exactly why it is due.
The name “Corona” (in Latin means crown or wreath) was christened cars and board games that have been released on the market, and so are the names of many places and people.
The “Corona” cafe experienced a real explosion with selfie photos in the city of Oberurchel. The virus made it famous, says Marguerite Franceset, who runs the cafe with her husband. Many people were searching for information on the internet and so they happened to find their ice cream parlor. People stood in the street or in their cars and were photographed in front of the sign. The cafe has been named after 1994. It refers to the way her husband grew up.
Humor and misunderstandings
The name of an Indian he wrote on Twitter caused misunderstandings. His name is Covid Kapoor. The World Health Organization, however, wanted to find a name that did not refer to people, animals or a geographical area.
“My name is Covid and I’m not a virus,” Kapoor wrote on Twitter. When his friends ordered a cake for his 30th birthday, the patisserie wrote: “Happy Birthday Covid, 30.”
The launch of the Memorial Vaccination Campaign brought more work to the event technology company Booster. People who wanted to get the third dose of the vaccine or had complaints about registering turned to the company, which politely explained to them that it was a mistake, says owner Rene Krauss. In no case, however, did he think of renaming the company, which has been named after him for 30 years.
