“I have decided to accept the resignation of Health Minister Adam Nijilski,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters
Poland’s Health Minister Adam Nijilski has been sacked by the government after he leaked the personal data of a doctor who had publicly criticized one of his reforms, causing an uproar in the country.
“I have decided to accept the resignation of Health Minister Adam Nijilski,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters, clarifying that he would be replaced by parliamentarian from the nationalist, populist PiS party, Katarina Soika.
Nijilski had been criticized by Poland’s medical community for a reform he promoted that would have limited the ability to prescribe drugs online. But he angered even members of his own party when, on August 4, he reported on Platform X that one of the doctors he had criticized had prescribed psychotropic and pain-killing drugs for himself.
The Supreme National Chamber of Doctors told the prime minister that doctors no longer trusted the minister and informed prosecutors that he may have committed an offense by breaching medical confidentiality. Doctors were also threatening to go on strike.
The crisis comes at a difficult time for the ruling party, which is preparing for parliamentary elections on October 15 and Nijilski’s ouster has been seen as a foregone conclusion for days.
