Instead of $3.25 million, an interested party can become the new owner of a peculiar property in Southern California known as the “Whale House”, which has the elongated shape of a marine mammal. The architectural inspiration lies within the woods of Santa Barbara and is available from Sotheby’s International Realty.

Built in 1978 after three years of work, the playful house – three bedrooms and three bathrooms plus a guest house – is the brainchild of engineer and architect Michael Carmichael who was inspired by the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí whose aesthetic style helped usher in Catalan Modernism in Barcelona.

Externally, the architecture is clad in wavy cedar shingles to blend in with the surrounding forest. The front door is, of course, the whale’s mouth. Inside, a spiral staircase, a rock-covered elevator shaft and undulating walls covered in Venetian plaster.

In addition, 270 stained glass windows. On the ground floor, the living room, the dining room and the kitchen area where the kitchen is carved into a curved stone wall. Upstairs, the spacious master bedroom while an additional bedroom, on the third floor. The belly of the ‘whale’ – an inner courtyard – is perfect for entertaining, with an almost 23m long pond that extends through a tunnel into a secret cave where – at the tail of the ‘whale’ – the guest house awaits.
