Iran today executed five men convicted of raping a woman in May 2022 in the northwestern part of the country, as announced by the Iranian Justice News Agency.

“Five men who had kidnapped and raped a woman in May 2022 in the city of Marad (northwest Iran) were executed today (Wednesday),” Mizan Online reported.

Executions in Iran are usually by hanging.

“The accused, who had a heavy criminal record, were arrested four days after the crime,” said the same source.

In early June, Amnesty International reported that 282 people had been executed so far in 2023 in Irani.e. “almost double” the number of executions recorded in the same period last year.

Iran executed 582 people in 2022, more than any other country except China, according to several human rights groups, including Amnesty International.

In early July, Iranian justice announced the execution of three men found guilty of drugging and then raping around 10 women in late 2021 at a beauty salon.
