The three-day online poll, which asked Americans whether they approve or disapprove of Biden’s handling of office, came in at 40 percent, the same as in July
US President Joe Biden’s approval rating held steady at 40% in early Augustwith concerns about the economy weighing on Americans’ opinion of the president’s performance despite falling inflation, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll this week.
The three-day online poll, which asked Americans whether they approve or disapprove of Biden’s handling of his duties, showed the same percentage, 40 percent, as in July.
54% of respondents said they disapprove of the Democratic president’s performance while 6% were unsure or declined to answer. The poll has a margin of error of three percentage points.
The economy, unemployment and jobs remained a key concern of Americansn, with one-fifth of respondents saying they are the most important problem facing the US today. 60% of Americans, including one in three Democrats, said they disapprove of Biden’s handling of inflation.
A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll last week found worries about the economy could cost Biden potential support in the 2024 election, when he might face Republican former President Donald Trump again. . One in five respondents who voted for Biden in 2020 said they were unsure whether they would support him this time around.
Biden’s 40% approval rating in the latest poll was just four points higher from the low of 36 points it was at in mid-2022.
The poll also had some encouraging news for Democrats. With some state Republican officials pushing for increasingly tough abortion bans, the poll found 81 percent of Americans oppose the idea of allowing states to prosecute people who travel to other states for abortions. That includes 68% of Republicans and 90% of Democrats.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, Aug. 4-6, gathering responses from 1,032 adults and using a nationally representative sample.
