About ten ships have been stranded and traffic on the river has been suspended
Traffic in river Rhine has been discontinued at height of Baselat northwestern Switzerlanddue to action by climate activists, the cantonal police said this morning.
“We are in close contact with the persons involved in the operation,” a police spokesman clarified, and traffic “has been stopped until further notice.”
About ten ships have been stranded and traffic on the river has been suspended. “Our absolute priority is to make sure no one involved gets hurt,” he stressed.
The action by about ten activists started before 07:00 local time (08:00 Greek time) from the Three Roses Bridge in the center of the city, with the aim of disrupting the transport of fuel on the Rhine, one of the main trade routes that conducted by rivers in Europe.
Six activists were lowered by ropes from the bridge. They unfurled two banners reading “Freedom of movement for people, not tankers” and the Stop sign, as reported by the Keystone-STA news agency.
Vigorous actions by climate activists are proliferating in Switzerland, often to stop traffic on busy arteries, sometimes sticking their hands to the asphalt.
This week, two members of Renovate Switzerland also disrupted the Locarno film festival by taking to the stage, where organizers allowed them to speak and denounce the lack of will in the fight against climate change.
These actions sometimes provoke outrage and are mainly denounced by the UDC (“Swiss People’s Party-Democratic Union of the Center”, Eurosceptic, anti-immigration far-right), the strongest faction in parliament at the moment in Switzerland, which characterizes the activists — the who carry out their actions without ever using violence—”climate terrorists.”
