A baby and a 20-year-old man have died and five others are missing after a shipwreck of Tunisian migrants occurred overnight off the coast of Gabes in southeastern Tunisia, the national guard said.
The tragedy “occurred at 2:00 a.m. (4:00 a.m. Greek time) 120 meters from the beach” on a boat carrying “20 Tunisians,” the national guard said in a statement, stressing that only 13 people were rescued.
Efforts to find other survivors continue in the vast Gulf of Gabes, which is dominated by strong sea currents.
“Two bodies were recovered, one of a 20-year-old and another of an infant” of unspecified age, the national guard announced.
“An investigation has been launched by the court” of Gabes to “determine the circumstances of the tragedy”.
More than 1,800 people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), have died since January in shipwrecks in the central Mediterranean (between North Africa and Italy), the world’s deadliest migration route, more than double the number from last year.
