Russia is moving ahead with equipping its new nuclear submarines with supersonic Zircon missiles, the head of Russia’s largest shipbuilding company told state-run Russian news agency RIA in an interview published today.
“The multipurpose nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M program … will be permanently equipped with the Zircon missile system,” Alexei Rakhmanov, CEO of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), told RIA.
“Work is already being done in this direction.”
The Yasen-class submarines, also known as Program 885M, are nuclear-powered submarines equipped with cruise missiles and have been built to replace Soviet-era nuclear attack submarines as part of a program to modernize the army and navy.

President Vladimir Putin stated earlier this year that Russia would begin the mass supplies of Zircon missiles as part of the country’s efforts to strengthen its nuclear forces.
The Russian multipurpose frigate Admiral Gorskov, which earlier this year tested its strike capabilities in the Atlantic Ocean, is already equipped with Zircon missiles.
