The number of foreign tourists visiting Portugal exceeded 8 million in the January-June periodmaking it the best first half on record, according to official figures released today.

The National Statistics Office announced that almost 8.2 million foreigners stayed in Portuguese hotels during this period, compared to 6.3 million a year earlier and 7.4 million in the first six months of 2019; of a record year for tourism before the COVID-19 pandemic hits travel around the world in 2020.

Tourism, a key driver of the Portuguese economy, accounted for around 15% of gross domestic product before the pandemic.

Visitors from Britain account for the majority of total arrivals in the first halfwith over a million visitors, followed by the Spanish and US markets.

The statistics office said the hotel industry recorded 13.6 million guests, including domestic travelers, in the first half, with total hotel revenue up 32 percent year-on-year to 2.5 billion euros.
