The Russian bombers were flying in international airspace north of Scotland, within NATO’s northern air policing area
Typhoon fighters of the British Air Force today intercepted two Russian naval patrol bombers in international airspace north of Scotland, within NATO’s northern air policing area, London announced.
“Pilots took off in Typhoon jets to intercept two Russian long-range bombers this morning, tracking them as they passed north of the Shetland Islands, ready to deal with any potential threat to UK territory,” British Defense Secretary James Hippey said.
The British government said Typhoons are regularly deployed for such security incidents and the protection of British airspace.
British pilots also recently led NATO’s aerial policing mission in Estonia, where more than 50 similar intercepts were carried out, he added.
Earlier today, Russia stressed that Russian strategic bombers carried out routine flights over international waters in the Arctic.
