American diplomacy rebelled yesterday Monday against the possibility that the military regime erected the day before Sunday to bring the ousted president Mohamed Bazum to trial for “high treason”, judging that it further escalates the tension.
“We are (…) disturbed by reports that President Bazum’s wrongful detention has gone a step further,” Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel said during a briefing of accredited editors at the State Department.
Last Sunday night, the military junta that seized power on July 26 in Niamey announced that it was gathering “evidence in order to bring the deposed president” Bazoum, “together with his accomplices”, to trial before the national and international competent authorities, for ” high treason’ and a ‘blow to the security’ of Niger.
“This action is completely unnecessary and unjustified,” Mr. Patel stressed, discounting that “it will certainly not contribute to the peaceful resolution of this crisis.”
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke on the phone with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Monday. The foreign minister praised the Nigerian president’s “leadership role” in the Economic Community of West African States and urged him to “keep the pressure” on the coup plotters in Niamey, according to a press release issued by his services.
