The majority of Americans vote either Democrat or Republicanfavors further tariffs on Chinese goods and believes the US needs to step up preparations for military threats from the country, according to a Reuters/Ipsos survey.

The two-day poll, which ended yesterday, revealed deep concerns among Americans about China’s global influence at a time when US-China relations have sunk to their lowest level in decades.

66% of respondents said they are more likely to support a candidate in the 2024 presidential election which “favors additional tariffs on Chinese imports.”

Also 66% of respondents – including 58% of Democrats and 81% of Republicans – agreed with the statement that the US “needs to do more to prepare for military threats from China.”

However, just 38% of Americans favor the potential deployment of US troops to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attackwhich captures the political constraints that would face any president seeking US military involvement in a conflict involving China.

Concern about China among both Democratic and Republican supporters helps explain the increasingly combative stance Republican nominees are taking toward the world’s second-largest economy.

In recent months, Republican White House hopefuls have been attacking China on a daily basis, with each candidate trying to show voters they are best suited to take on America’s geopolitical rival.

The Reuters/Ipsos online poll was conducted nationwide, gathering responses from 1,005 adults.

75% of Americans had a negative view of China, while 84% view President Xi Jinping at least slightly unfavorably. 65% believe the Chinese government is trying to influence the US election. While half of those polled favor providing military equipment to Taiwan to repel a possible Chinese attack, 42% oppose the deployment of US troops to defend Taiwan.
