The British Museum, founded in 1753, is one of the most visited in the world. In it, among other things, the famous Parthenon Sculptures are kept, despite the perennial request of Athens for their return to Greece.
The British Museum today revealed the “extremely unusual” theft of artefacts including jewelery and semi-precious stones dating back to the 15th century BC, saying it had sacked a staff member believed to be responsible. According to the museum, it was found that collection items had “disappeared, been stolen or damaged”.
“This is an extremely unusual incident. I know I speak for all my colleagues in saying that we take the safeguarding of all the objects in our care very seriously,” said British Museum Director Hartwich Fisher. “The Museum apologizes for what happened”, he emphasized and added that it has taken legal action against the employee who was fired.
The chairman of the British Museum and former British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne did not hide the tax authorities’ concern about the theft of the objects “earlier this year”. He assured that the priority is to recover the stolen goods and to ensure that a similar incident will not be repeated in the future. He added that he is working with the police to fully clarify the case.
