Niger’s new strongman, General Abduraman Chiani, who seized power in a military coup last month, said on Saturday that the “transition” period would not exceed three years, while warning against foreign military intervention in the country. .

“Our ambition is not to seize power,” General Ciani said during his televised speech, assuring that the transition “will not exceed three years.”

“If there is an attack against us, it will not be a healthy walk as some believe,” he warned at the same time, a day after a regional organization announced that it was ready to proceed with military intervention.

In the speech, lasting about twelve minutes, General Ciani also announced the start of a “national dialogue”, lasting thirty days, to draw up “proposals” to lay the foundations of a new Constitution.

The speech of the head of the junta was made after the visit to Niamey, earlier yesterday, of a delegation of the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO in French, ECOWAS in English), in order to seek a peaceful settlement of the crisis.

“CEDEAO is preparing to attack Niger by creating an occupation army in collaboration with a foreign army,” General Chiani added, without specifying which country’s armed forces he was referring to.

He also denounced once again the “illegal” and “inhumane” sanctions of the regional organization.

Since July 30, Niger has been under heavy economic and trade sanctions by ECOWAS, which is demanding the restoration to power of ousted president Mohamed Bazoum. The latter remains a prisoner of the military since the coup took place on July 26.
