Hurricane Hillary weakened yesterday Saturday to category 2 on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale in the Baja California peninsula, in northwestern Mexico, where rains caused damage, however not serious, and is now heading to California, USA.

At 03:00 (Greece time), the typhoon, with winds gusting up to 155 kilometers per hour, was 390 kilometers from the town of Punta Euchenia, in the central part of the peninsula, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Before moving toward southern California, it is expected to produce heavy rainfall in places across the peninsula, the NHC added.

Because of its wind speed – which is less than predicted – Hillary was downgraded from a category 3 to a category 2.

According to the Mexican meteorological service, rain accompanied by lightning is expected, while there is a risk of flooding in a large part of the country.

The agency urged the population to be cautious due to the possibility of strong waves and rising water levels.

In Los Campos, Baja California, which attracts many foreign tourists, shops had put up sandbags to protect themselves and others packed away table seats.

The Mexican navy said there was “minor damage” to infrastructure and private property, mainly due to downed trees, minor flooding and damage to some roads on the peninsula.

For its part, the government in the state of Baja California, where the city of Tijuana is located, ensured that reception centers were opened for flood victims. He had already spoken of heavy rains.

Hillary is the first hurricane of the season to make landfall on the Mexican Pacific coast.

In general, hurricanes and tropical cyclones are common along the Mexican coast in both the Pacific and Atlantic from May to November.
