At least two people were injured today when pieces of a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (drone), destroyed by Russian air defenses, fell on a house in the Moscow region, the regional governor said.

Nearly 50 airline flights to and from the capital were affected from Russia’s interception, as Moscow reported, of a Ukrainian drone in the Ruzhsky district, west of the capital, and the destruction of another in the Istrinsky district nearby.

Arrivals and departures to and from Moscow’s four main airports — Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovksi — were curtailed, affecting 45 passenger and two transport planes, Russia’s civil aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, said.

Russian officials have repeatedly warned that military drones flying over Moscow — which, along with the region around the Russian capital, has a population of 22 million — could cause major destruction.

In a separate development, Russia’s defense ministry said it shot down a drone in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, while the governor of Kaluga region, south of Moscow, said a drone was also pushed back there. No damage has been reported from these attacks.

Aerial drone strikes deep inside Russian territory have increased after two drones were destroyed over the Kremlin in early May. Drone strikes in the Russian capital have become more frequent in recent months.

It is unclear what impact the drone attacks will have on Russian citizens’ perceptions of the war. Polls show that support for the Russian military operation in Ukraine remains high, at around 75%, although there are questions about how accurate the polls are in Russia.

Ukraine does not typically comment on who is behind attacks on Russian soil, although officials have expressed public satisfaction over them.
