The President of Uzbekistan Shafkat Mirziyoyev has appointed his eldest daughter Sayda Mirziyoyev to the post of presidential adviser, the press service of the presidency announced today.

The move drew ironic reactions from some Uzbeks, who mostly live outside Uzbekistan, while others wrote on social media that her communications background could help her father promote the Central Asian country’s image. Her sister Sakhnoza is also a high-ranking civil servant.

Mirziyoyev succeeded the country’s longtime president Islam Karimov after his death in 2016, and was re-elected president for another seven years in last month’s election, in a vote that Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe observers said was “technically well prepared but without real competition”.

Uzbekistan has no strong politicians or opposition parties, but Mirziyoyev describes himself as a reformer, opening the country’s economy to the outside world and softening the authoritarian policies of his predecessor.
