Yemen: Five killed in Marib’s rocket attack by Houthi rebels

by

Five people, including three civilians, were killed and 23 others were injured Wednesday in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on the strategic city of Marib, which remains in the hands of the internationally recognized Yemeni government, a medical source said.

Shiite Houthi rebels, believed to be close to Iran, have claimed responsibility via Twitter for the attack on the city in the northern part of the 2014 war-torn country.

According to a military source close to the government, a ballistic missile fired by the Houthis hit Marib, the capital of the homonymous province where hostilities have been raging for almost a year. A medical source said two soldiers and three civilians were killed and 23 others were injured.

The last stronghold of government forces in northern Yemen, the oil-rich province of Marib, has been turned into a theater of bloody battles since February 2021. The rebels, who control almost the entire rest of northern Yemen, seek to seize the province and especially its eponymous capital.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a Saudi-backed military alliance led by the Saudi-backed Harib community south of Marib.

On January 17, the Houthis launched an attack on a facility in Abu Dhabi with three dead. The attack was followed by a series of deadly coalition airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen and ground operations by government troops. On Monday, the United Arab Emirates announced the interception of two ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis.

The war in Yemen has claimed the lives of at least 377,000 people, mostly civilians, according to UN estimates.
