The White House announced on Tuesday that it was reassured to have seen the video of the American citizen Paul Whelan, a former Marine who is imprisoned in Russia on what the US calls false espionage charges, and called on Moscow to release him immediately.

Whelan was arrested in 2018 in Russia, he was charged with espionage in 2020 and sentenced to 16 years in a penal colony in Mordovia, a region of Russia known since the Soviet era for its penal colonies. He denies the charges.

“It was reassuring to see that Paul is staying, and that’s why to repeat the words of his brother, ‘flexible’. Paul continues to show tremendous strength,” White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre told reporters. “Russia should release him immediately.”
