Fukushima fish sashimi was eaten by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishidain an apparent attempt to show that fish are safe after the release of treated radioactive waste water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which started last week.

Kishida and three ministers ethey had sashimi of cabbage, octopus and sea bass, caught off the coast of Fukushima after the release, along with vegetables, fruit and a bowl of rice, said Economy and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who was at the meeting.

The release of treated sewage into the ocean, which began Thursday, is expected to continue for decades, has caused the reactions of fishermen and neighboring countries. China immediately banned all Japanese seafood imports in response. In South Korea, thousands of people rallied over the weekend to condemn the dumping of radioactive waste.

All sampling has, however, shown that the concentration of radioactivity is well below the established safety limits.
