Former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin resigned on Friday from the presidency of the center-left Social Democratswho narrowly lost an election in April, prioritizing her personal life as she had stated, reports Reuters.

Marin, who had announced her intention to resign immediately after the election defeat, was the youngest prime minister in the world, a position in which sheelected in 2019 at the age of 34attracting worldwide attention and helping Finland’s profile.

After leading the country through the COVID-19 lockdowns and subsequent economic turmoil, Marin was among Ukraine’s most vocal supporters after Russia invaded last year and successfully pushed for an end to Finland’s military neutrality in favor of NATO membership.

She presided over her party’s conference for the last time on Friday and in a short speech reiterated her criticism of Russia. “Russia and its proxies must be held accountable for the illegal crime of aggression, war crimes and the consequences of war,” Marin said.

“In addition to Finland’s steadfast support for Ukraine and Ukrainians, we must also send a strong message of hope for the reconstruction of the country, for a European future,” added the former prime minister.

Marin, now 37, has appeared on the covers of Vogue and Time magazine, has a million followers on Instagram and is seen by fans around the world as a millennial role model for progressive leaders.

But at home, voters worried about issues such as immigration and the growing public deficit in April gave the right-wing National Coalition and the far-right Finns party a narrow victory over Marin, bringing down the government.

She has faced numerous criticisms of her private life while in office, including attending a nightclub during the pandemic, hosting private parties at her official residence and voluntarily taking a drug test after a party video was leaked to the media .

The drug test was negative, Marin announced at the time, and she apologized to Finns for a photo from a party at the prime minister’s seaside residence that showed two well-known female influencers covering their bare chests with a “Finland” sign.

After losing the election, Marin said that he was looking forward to a quieter life, while she later announced that she was divorcing her husband.

Taking the stage Friday to Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” Marin thanked her party for its support. She is due to formally hand over the reins later on Friday, after the Social Democrats elect a new leader.

Marin remains a member of parliament, is also registered as a public speaker with a US agency and has set up a consulting firm with her former aide.
