Officials of Ukrainian state security services they named the powerful businessman Ihor Kolomoisky as a suspect in a fraud case and money laundering, the SBU security service reported today.

The president Volodymyr Zelensky has made fighting corruption a priority as Ukraine struggles against the Russian invasion that began 18 months ago, and Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine’s richest men, is the best-known of those targeted.

Zelensky, who became best known as a comedian in the role of the president in a series broadcast by a television network owned by Kolomoisky, denies having personal relations with the businessman.

“It was established that in the period 2013-2020 Ihor Kolomoisky legalized more than half a million hryvnias ($14 million) by withdrawing them abroad and using the infrastructure of the controlled banks,” said in a statement posted by the SBU on the Telegram application.

Kolomoisky could not be reached for comment by Reuters.

The agency released images showing a team of police investigators at the door of his housewith Kolomoisky receiving and signing documents.

Kolomoisky is the former owner of the major Ukrainian bank PrivatBank, which was nationalized in late 2016 as part of a reorganization of the country’s banking system.

Earlier this year, security officials searched Kolomoisky’s residence in connection with a separate investigation into embezzlement and tax evasion at the country’s two largest oil companies that were partly owned by the businessman.

Kolomoisky was the owner of assets in energy, banking and other sectors, including one of the most influential television networks in Ukraine.

The United States imposed sanctions on Kolomoisky in 2021 “due to his involvement in a major corruption case.” US authorities also allege that Kolomoisky and a business partner laundered embezzled funds through the United States. Kolomoisky denies the charges.
