This is the largest reshuffle of the wartime political leadership of the Ministry of Defense to date – Who succeeds Reznikov
The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky announced Sunday night that he would ask the country’s parliament this week to dismiss Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov and to replace him with the Rustem Umerov, the head of the country’s privatization fund.
The announcement, made in the Ukrainian president’s nightly videotaped address to the nation, heralds the largest reorganization to date of the political leadership of the Ministry of Defense in wartime.
The decision Zelensky comes under the shadow of Western criticism that the troops of Kiev are advancing their counterattack against the Russian forces at a very slow pace.
The long-awaited counteroffensive, which is approaching three months in duration, has recaptured at least a dozen villages, but no significant settlements, with the soldiers hampered by massive Russian minefields and defensive lines.
This week, unnamed US officials expressed frustration at the slow progress of the businessgoing so far as to blame the Ukrainian strategy, according to Western reports that angered Kiev.
The Zelensky announcement
“I decided to replace the Minister of Defense of Ukraine. Oleksii Reznikov spent more than 550 days of war. I believe that the Ministry needs new ones approaches and other forms of interaction both with the army and with society as a whole. The head of the ministry is now Rustem Umerov. The Parliament of Ukraine knows this person well, and Mr. Umerov does not need additional introductions. I expect the parliament to support this candidacy.”
