Defense Ministry men checking crossing points from the Gaza Strip into Israel found “kilos of high-grade explosives hidden in a load of clothes being transported on three trucks” in Kerem Shalom, the text said.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli army, Herchi Halevi, ordered the suspension of exports from the Gaza Strip to Israel on Monday, after a foiled attempt to smuggle explosives, according to a press release from the armed forces and the Ministry of Defense.
Defense Ministry men checking crossing points from the Gaza Strip into Israel found “kilos of high-grade explosives hidden in a load of clothes being transported on three trucks” in Kerem Shalom, the text said.
With the approval of Defense Minister Yoav Gallad, General Halevi ordered a halt to “deliveries of goods from Gaza to Israel so that modifications to the security measures at the checkpoint can be made.”
Kerem Shalom is the only transit point for goods to and from Israel, which has imposed a suffocating blockade on the Gaza Strip since the Islamist Hamas movement seized power in the tiny coastal Palestinian enclave in 2007.
Deliveries will resume after “further assessment of the situation,” according to the text.
The Gaza Strip, an enclave plagued by poverty and unemployment, home to 2.3 million Palestinians, has been the scene of repeated hostilities since 2008.
