Pakistan’s army, with the help of reinforcements sent to the border, has repelled an attack launched from Afghanistan by “hundreds” of Pakistani Taliban, a senior official said.

“There were hundreds of them, equipped with heavy and light weapons. We were ready to face the attack and the exchange of fire continued for about four hours,” Mohammed Ali, the deputy commissioner of Sitral district, told AFP.

Pakistan’s Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) movement has been strengthened since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Islamabad often accuses the neighboring country of harboring Pakistani insurgents, which the Taliban denies.

Muhammad Ali said four Pakistani soldiers and nine insurgents were killed in the battle.

“We have been monitoring their movements in the zones near the border for two-three days (…) The informers also informed us about the movements of the organization and we were ready to deal with them,” he insisted.

In its own statement, the TTP claimed to have captured two military outposts in the Boburit district of Sitral.
