The Italian prime minister Georgia Meloni, during today’s press conference, in response to a related question, she referred to the statements of her partner, journalist Andrea Jabruno, who had recently spoken about the risk of women falling victim to rape. More specifically, on his TV show ten days ago, Jabruno stated that “women in clubs clearly have the right to get drunk, but if they avoid getting drunk and passing out, they can also avoid certain situations because there is always the bad guy wolf”.

Asked about this tonight, the Italian Prime Minister underlined:

“I believe the man said to me in a hurried manner and in a decisive tone something different from what most people interpreted. I didn’t interpret that as a reference to “if you come around in a mini, you can be raped”. I interpret it as something related to what my mother used to tell me when I was young and going out at night: “keep your eyes open, behave responsibly”. I mean that rapists exist and we must always be careful. To be careful, to be clear, to do everything we can to not put ourselves in a situation that allows these animals to do what they would like, I think is advice that many parents would give their children. My mother always told me to keep my eyes open and be responsible. I do not think that rapists can be justified in this way. I think it’s a message that says to girls, ‘be careful, because it’s a phenomenon that, unfortunately, we come across every day. These stories exist and you have to keep your eyes open and be responsible.'”
