However, Austria does not plan to participate in the purchase of long-range systems, such as the American-Israeli Arrow 3, which Germany intends to acquire, according to the defense minister.
Austria’s government plans to buy eight arrays of the Iris-T medium-range air defense system from Germany, which will be part of the European Sky Shield system, the country’s defense minister said on Tuesday. Claudia Tanner.
The acquisition of the launchers and missiles and the training of members of the Austrian military who will operate the arrays will be done by the German armed forces, Ms. Tanner explained.
The day before Monday, the defense ministers of Estonia and Latvia signed a framework agreement for the purchase of arrays of the system, produced by the German industry Diehl Defence.
According to Ms. Tanner, Vienna and Berlin will sign a preliminary agreement within weeks.
According to Austria’s Chief of Air Staff, Gerfried Proberger, the purchase of four short-range and another four medium-range arrays is planned.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 it is “absolutely essential” to close any air defense gaps in European airspace, Ms Tanner said.
However, Austria does not plan to participate in the purchase of long-range systems, such as the American-Israeli Arrow 3, which Germany intends to acquire, according to the defense minister.
