The European Commission announced today the aid mission from Germany, Romania and Finland to the Libyan city of Derna, which was hit by deadly floodsunder the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

“The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated. Help is on the way from Germany, Romania and Finland,” the representative of the Ball Committee, Balas Uzvari, said in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

Among other things, tents, ranches, blankets, 80 electric generators, food, hospital tents and water tanks are being sent, a Commission press release clarifies, adding that the European Union is ready “to coordinate other offers of assistance”.

The Commission also highlighted that it has made available an initial amount of €500,000 to respond to the most urgent needs of Libyans affected by the powerful storm Daniel.

“The EU remains ready to step up its response to those most affected in Libya during this difficult period,” said European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janes Lenarcic.

At least 30,000 people have been displaced in Derna, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said earlier today after devastating floods caused by Storm Daniel have left thousands dead and missing in the Libyan coastal city, according to authorities.

The exact number of victims of the disaster remains unclear given the difficult access to this city of 100,000 people in eastern Libya.
