Aid workers who managed to reach the city described devastation in its center, with thousands missing and tens of thousands left homeless.
Rescue crews in Libya are fighting against time to search for the missing due to the Daniel flood that hit the country causing chaos.
The collapse of two dams resulted in rapid waters drowning towns and villages resulting inat least 5,300 people to lose their lives in Derna according to a spokesman for the interior ministry of eastern Libya and thousands are missing.
The city of Derna has suffered almost total destruction. Aid workers who managed to reach the city described devastation in its center, with thousands missing and tens of thousands left homeless, according to AFP.
“Dead bodies are everywhere, inside houses, on the streets, in the sea. Everywhere you go, you find dead men, women and children,” said Emad al-Falah, a humanitarian from Benghazi. “Entire families perished.”
A quarter of the city is gone, emergency officials said.
The waves reached 7 meters, Jan Friedez, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Libya, told France24 television.
The death toll is likely to rise as teams continue to collect bodies. At least 9,000 people are missing, but that number may drop as communications are restored.
At least 30,000 people in Derna were displaced by the floods, the UN’s International Organization for Migration said.
The storm also hit other areas in eastern Libya, including the towns of Bayda, Susa and Marj. Rescuers recovered at least 150 bodies on Wednesday from the sea off Bayda, raising the death toll in the town to around 200.
The terrifying destruction showed the intensity of the storm, but also the vulnerability of Libya.
