A young woman who had visited a Tashkent zoo threw a baby girl into a cage that housed a brown bear. The child was not injured by the animal, but by the fall and is under medical supervision, the press service of the zoo of the capital of Uzbekistan announced.
The incident happened, according to the announcement, this morning at 09:00 Greek time, when a young woman, for unknown reasons, threw a little girl in the bear cage, in front of the visitors. Both the visitors and the zoo staff tried to stop the young woman when they realized what she was going to do but they did not succeed, as a result of which the child fell into the yard where the bear cage is located from a height of 5 meters.
The Caucasian brown bear, named Zuzu, appears to have been watching the young woman’s movements as she lay in the cage yard when she threw the baby away. Then the animal “slowly went down to the ditch, approached the little girl, smelled it and walked away. “The officers reacted immediately and began to turn the bear’s attention elsewhere so that he could enter an interior space, which he entered immediately.”
Authorities removed the child from the yard, which was examined by a nurse. According to the announcement of the zoo, “the little girl was injured falling from a height of almost 5 meters and not from the bear’s teeth” as well as that “during the initial examination, apart from bruises, no serious injuries were found”.
The police are investigating the causes of this incident, while the age of the child who is under medical supervision has not been made known. The zoo administration said it would cover all medical expenses required for the child’s medical care.
The Zuzu brown bear, as announced by the Tashkent Zoo, was transferred to the zoo from the Baku Zoo in 2017 and what distinguished it is that it is “social, has a playful mood and is happy with visitors.” The statement said that the bear had no bitterness towards humans and that “this behavior of the animal is a result of the proper treatment of the animal in captivity by the staff of the zoo and its polite and affectionate behavior towards the bear.”
